As we age the first place we notice it is in the face.  Those wrinkles in the forehead especially cause a great deal of concern for many of us.  For some time there has been the option of a surgical procedure to eliminate this problem, but in many cases it is not necessary to resort to something that aggressive.  There are now options for the reduction of wrinkles in the forehead and that area between the eyebrows.  We have heard about BOTOX® Cosmetic, but there is now an additional alternative known as Dysport®.

Dr. Anitha Reddy, Medical Director of M.D. Aesthetics and Wellness Institute in Tampa Florida, offers Dysport® as a part of her practice. Dysport® has been used in Europe for over 15 years.  This product is approved by the FDA for injection as a temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines (lines between the eye brows and forehead) in adults.  Dr. Reddy is seeing very positive results with her patients.

Dysport® is injected the same way as BOTOX® Cosmetic and has been reported to have many similarities.  However, Dr. Reddy reports that Dysport® may act quicker.  BOTOX® Cosmetic can take up to two weeks to work, while Dysport® seems to work within several days. In some cases, wrinkles begin to fade within 24 hours after receiving Dysport® treatment. The speed in which Dysport® works could be the deciding factor for a woman or man looking to improve their appearance before a big social event or meeting.

What’s more, Dysport® may last longer than its predecessor. Some studies have shown Dysport® injections may keep wrinkles at bay up to six months, as opposed to the three month timeframe associated with BOTOX® Cosmetic.

The potential side effects of Dysport® are similar to those associated with a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. They include local numbness, swelling, bruising or a burning sensation during injection. Dr. Reddy assesses each individual’s response and provide the appropriate procedure to reduce or eliminate these side effects

Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport® is an injectable form of botulinum toxin Type A.  Dr. Reddy injects small amounts of the toxin into specific wrinkle-causing muscles, temporarily weakening them.  The amount of ® used and the locations will vary according to the patient.  .
